The Comparing Game: Unlocked Devotional

Today I’m sharing another piece I wrote for Unlocked Daily Readings for Teens.

Comparison is a tricky balance: it can seem innocent at first, like observing a fact (‘Well look at that, I write neater than him’). But it can quickly turn into arrogance (‘Ha, I write so much better than him!’), or we can end up tearing ourselves down (‘But he’s so much better at writing essays than me…’).

I know I definitely struggle with comparison, especially when it comes to writing. At first, I’m just noticing the differences between my writing and someone else’s, but soon I fall into depression and feel like I’m not a good enough writer.

When I feel like that, I have to stop thinking about how I feel about myself and instead remember how God sees me. We all write differently, and that’s what makes reading and writing so exciting! There are always new perspectives to discover; new voices to listen to.

Instead of comparison, let’s start to see ourselves and others as God sees us: unique and one of a kind, given a unique set of gifts, abilities, and interests for a reason.
