Sometimes it’s a new idea. Sometimes it’s from busyness. Sometimes it’s sadness or fear. Sometimes it’s anticipation or excitement, other times it’s dread or worry.
Whatever reason, we all sometimes find ourselves wide awake at night. I know I do. In my frustration with my awakeness (and the boredom that comes with it), I often choose to do some reading—sometimes a favourite novel or an old classic, but often I open my Bible and read from the psalms.
One night, I discovered Psalm 4:8, and immediately wrote it down, knowing it’s a verse I would turn to again and again: “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
“In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, Lord,
make me dwell in safety.”
PSALM 4:8 (NIV)
Writing is the way I best process my struggles, so many of the devotionals I write are from my own experiences. It’s a way for me to help me sort out my thoughts, but also, in the process, help others. I wrote this devotional to encourage others who may feel the way I do; to remind them that there is hope even in our darkest nights.
