It finally happened! After years of dreaming about writing for a magazine, my very first article is now published: “Sweet gifts of love: Baking cookies for strangers during the pandemic.”
Writing this piece for Love Is Moving has been an amazing adventure into the unknown world of magazine writing, and I’ve already learned so much.
It started with an initial idea and spark of inspiration, which I then crafted into a pitch. With some revising, I formed that pitch into an article. I learned how much editing and careful word choice goes into a single article to match the tone and audience of the magazine.
Challenging? Yes. A bit scary? Perhaps. But exciting? Definitely! After my writing was refined came the most exciting part: watching the article develop into something real, with a title, page, and magazine issue.
Then I saw it published online at loveismoving.ca, and that moment filled me with joy. I kept opening the link, surprised every time (“Hey, that’s MY article! That’s crazy!”).
And then the print magazine came in the mail. It was a bit hard to look at it at first, a humbling moment as a writer. I blinked in disbelief. My article, months in the making, filled AN ENTIRE PAGE?
It was an enjoyable challenge to write something longer than the devotionals I’m used to. I strongly encourage writers interesting in publishing to start out writing in a smaller format like this. It introduces you to the querying, editing, revising, and above all, perseverance essential in the publishing industry.
