It’s World Book Day 2021!
Saying you’re a writer but don’t read is like saying you’re a cook but don’t eat. Books are our ‘food’ as writers; they fill us with inspiration. They help us learn about the writing craft and teach us about stories.
All writers start out as readers, and reading good books is what makes us want to write good books.
P. L. Travers, the author of Mary Poppins, wrote, “A writer is, after all, only half his book. The other half is the reader and from the reader the writer learns.”
Here are a few of my favourite quotes from children’s authors who have inspired me on my writing journey. All come from books that make fantastic reads for children and young-at-heart alike for World Book Day; they explore the importance of books and the power of stories.
“Worlds and everything in them are made real by the stories that inhabit them.”
Jonathan Auxier, Sophie Quire and the Last Storyguard
“Books themselves are freedom. Freedom to think, to believe, to dream.”
Jennifer A. Nielsen, Words on Fire
“Stories are light. Light is precious in a world so dark.”
Kate DiCamillo, The Tale of Despereaux
What books have had an impact on your life or inspired you? I hope you take time this World Book Day to enjoy some reading, whether it’s an old favourite or something new.
