I recently read a quote from Jonathan Auxier, a Canadian children’s author, that gave me a new perspective on my role as a writer and a storyteller:
“All artists, storytellers included, have one job: Tell the truth.”
Jonathan Auxier
All writing, even fiction, can hold a lot of deep truths. And since our work often reflects our life or personal experiences, to write requires vulnerability, openness and courage.
For Love is Moving magazine’s latest issue, Thrive: resilient habits shaped by Jesus, I decided to share about my health journey over the past year. But as I began to write, I realized how much I was still struggling. I didn’t know all the answers, and I felt unqualified to be writing this.
But then I realized that it’s okay to not have all the answers — I will constantly be learning and growing. Though being honest and open in writing is hard, it’s so important. Our world needs truth, and most of all, God’s truths in the Bible.
The defining paragraph of the article sums it up well:
“Health goes beyond just superficial attempts to look or feel good, and it’s not a one-time accomplishment. Health is a lifelong journey, involving physical, mental, and spiritual growth. I’m learning the best way to find freedom from the world’s pressures is to focus on the truth amid the lies. This means looking at what God defines as healthy.”
If you are struggling with your health, know that you are not alone. Seek help and support from those around you. No matter where you are on your journey, I hope you are encouraged and comforted by this article and find freedom in living in God’s picture of health.
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 10:31 (NIV)
