For my daily devotions, I enjoy doing studies that work their way through books of the Bible, so when I heard that Unlocked devotional was looking for devotions that give an overview of Bible books, I was excited to start writing!
Each devotion summarizes the book’s purpose, audience, historical context, themes, key ideas and topics, and how it all connects to the Good News of the Gospel.
Deuteronomy: Reflecting Back and Looking Forward
“The Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything.”
Deuteronomy 2:7 (NIV)
Deuteronomy is Moses’ speech to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land, and it functions similarly to a modern graduation speech. The people reflect back on their journey so far out of slavery in Egypt and through the wilderness, and they look forward to the new chapter of their history. Through it all, God has been faithful and always will be.

Greater than Anything
“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.”
Hebrews 10:23 (NIV)
“Greater than Anything” is a look at the book of Hebrews. This was one of the most difficult devotionals I’ve ever written (Hebrews is not an easy book, partly because of all the Old Testament references), but much of it can be summarized in three simple words: Jesus is greater. He is greater than anything.

Romans: Good News for Everyone!
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (NIV)
Romans is a book all about the good news of God’s plan of salvation for all people. It’s one of the best books for new Christians to read as it summarizes the foundation of our faith in Jesus. Romans is also especially helpful for those looking for a starting point to share the gospel message with others.
